History of Wiki:

Wikipedia is perhaps the most widely used collaborative media source on the Web today. The brain child of Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, Wikipedia was originally called Nupedia. However, Wales and Sanger were not the first to think of such a collaborative media source; in 1999, Richard Stallman proposed his own Gnupedia as a “free Universal Encyclopedia and Learning Resource.” Originally, Nupedia was only able to produce about twenty articles in its first eighteen months, and Wales and Sanger began to ponder an easier way for people without the proper credentials to contribute to Nupedia. Instead, Wales and Sanger instated the use of WikiWikiWeb software, which enabled users to create their own web pages without the use of HTML. The installation of the WikiWikiWeb software into the Nupedia concept originally called for Nupedia experts to edit the content posted by its users, and later Wales and Sanger changed this concept to what would become Wikipedia. After Wales and Sanger introduced Wikipedia in 2001, it amassed nearly a thousand articles in its first month, and by the end of its first year Wikipedia had 20,000 articles. Wikipedia rose as a free, collaborative encyclopedia, and today contains more than one million English language articles. Today more than 55,00 people have made at least 10 contributions to Wikipedia, and it is certain that as technology keeps changing and improving, Wikipedia will change and improve as well.

  • A wiki is basically a database for creating and searching information.

  • Wiki's can be edited very easily and are usually open to the public, some require user accounts.

  • Formatting a wiki is done in what is sometimes called "wikitext" and they sometimes use plain text.

  • Some people believe wiki's provide false or unreliable information.
